Transcription
First of all transcribe the audio.
To do this you need a word processor and an audio editor midi controllable to control the video or audio that you want to transcribe and maybe convert to subtitle. That audio software will run on the background while transcribing.
We don’t need to buy external midi hardware to control the player cause with midi translator software and an internal virtual midi port; we will convert some computer keys to audio control commands using some computer keys that the word processor doesn’t need as midi audio control keys.
We need:
- An audio editor midi controllable. I recommend using Virtual DJ, Adobe Audition, Sony Vegas or Native Instruments Traktor cause on them you can listen the audio while is forwarding and rewinding like on a tape recorder. Timestretch is a good audio tool for transcribing that comes with those software. (Sony Sound Forge can be used too.)
- A midi translator program like Bome's Midi Translator to convert some computer keys to midi commands to control the audio software on the background while you type the text.
- An internal virtual midi port like LoopBe Internal Midi Port (Freeware) to link the Bome's Midi Translator output Midi commands to the Midi input of the audio editor.
- A word processor. You can use Microsoft Office Word, but there is a lot of free text processor soft.
- Optional a speech-to-voice software like Dragon NaturallySpeaking is useful if you have to expend a lot of hours typing.

Here you can download combination configs for:

Keys: "Right Alt" to play/pause, "Right Ctrl" to rewind, "Right Shift" to forward, "Esc" to fast-rewind, "F2" to fast-forward

Assign "Right Ctrl" key to act as midi note "C6" that in Adobe Audition we will configure as REW. That needs 2 translators.
Incoming: Key down=ESC Outgoing= 90 54
Assign "Right Alt" key to act as midi note "D6" that in Adobe Audition we will configure as Play/Pause. That needs 1 translator.
Incoming: Key down=ALT GR Outgoing= 90 56
Assign "Right Shift" key to act as midi note "E6" that in Adobe Audition we will configure as FFWD. That needs 2 translators.
Incoming: Key down=F2 Outgoing= 90 58
On Adobe Audition open “On Keyboard Shortcuts And Midi Triggers” option.
Select Transport FF While Key Pressed, place the cursor on Midi Trigger and press key “Right Shift”.
Select Transport Play All/Pause Toggle, place the cursor on Midi Trigger and press key “Right Alt”.
Select Transport RR While Key Pressed, place the cursor on Midi Trigger and press key “Right Ctrl”.
Maybe you or your computer needs to be configured on a different way. There are a lot of possibilities.

Ready to import the media to Adobe Audition, listen it , control it and type what you hear.
Creating the subtitles over the audio wave.
Once you have transcribed the video or audio you have to break lines to 40 characters long maximum. We will use Subtitle Workshop
(You can use too Subtitle Processor creating a new subtitle and using the option Reformat Lines, Characters Count for 40 lenght long)
To do this select the whole transcribed document (or the first paragraph) and copy it to the clipboard, open Urusoft SubtitleWorkShop, create a New subtitle (CTRL+N) and paste the content of the clipboard.
Now use Set maximum legnth (SHIFT+CTRL+L) to set lines to desired length.
Now select all the divided lines, copy them and paste to your text editor, Microsoft Word Office for example, and finish to adjust the lines to your taste. Microsoft Word has a tool to count characters and words that maybe can help you.
When the work is finished, copy to the clipboard the first text line.
Open the video or audio on Sony Vegas and with J, K and L keys play the media and find the start point of the subtitle, that you want to create, over the waveform display and pause playing with K key. (You can use too the Bome Midi Translator Config For Sony Vegas and the midi file config for control the software with the same keys as the transcription (Right Alt to play/pause, Right Ctrl to rew, Right Shift to forward, Esc to fast-rewind and F2 to fast-forward Here you can download)
Now press M to insert a marker and paste the clipboard text content as his marker name. You can set the end of the subtitle adding a marker without marker name text or you can adjust later the end when the markers were converted to regions. If you insert empty markers, them will be
converted to empty subtitles that you have to delete later on Urusoft Subtitle Workshop or DivxLand Media Subtitler.
Repeat the operation with the second text line. Copy to clipboard and paste as a marker over the audio wave.
And do so over the whole transcription.
When the hard work is done we will use VASST JHM_MarkersToRegions Sony Vegas script to convert Markers to Regions.
Adjust the Regions Ends if you need. If you need the subtitle for Sony DvdArchitect you can adjust subtitle ends there too.
<>If you want to create SubRip srt subtitles format files:
Option 1
- Use VASST Export Regions As Ssa Subtitles Sony Vegas Script to export first to a SSA subtitles. If you try to open it on Urusoft Subtitle Workshop it doesnt work yet, the program considers it erroneous.
- To convert this SSA file to SRT you hav to open it on Subtitle Processor as Unicode UTF-8
codification and save it as SubRip Srt on the codification of the language you are working (if you
choose bad some symbols will be changed).
- Now you can open it on Urusoft SubtitleWorkshop or DivxLand Media Subtitler to finish the subtitle adjust work.
Option 2
- Use script Export Regions as subtitles on Sony Vegas to create a Sony Dvd Architect Subtitle file.
- On Subtitle Workshop create a new file and subtitle with whatever and save it adding to the archive name something like Urusoft Subtitle Workshop.
- Open the Sony Dvd Architect Subtitle created by Sony Vegas on a Notepad and copy the content to the clipboard.
- Open the Sony Dvd Architect Subtitle created by Urusoft Subtitle Workshop on a Notepad and paste the content of the clipboard. Save and close.
- Now you can open the Sony Dvd Architect Subtitle created by Urusoft Subtitle Workshop on Urusoft Subtitle Workshop and if you need, convert it to the format desired like SubRip srt, etc.
For Sony DvdArchitect users:
<>If you want to use the subtitles that Sony Vegas has created on Sony DvdArchitect:
- We will use the Sony Vegas included Export Regions As Subtitles script to convert them to the Sony Dvd Architect Subtitle format.
- On Sony DVD Architect import the media transcribed and on the edit part add a subtitle track and import the created subtitles.
- To open that file on Subtitle Workshop create a new file and subtitle with whatever and save it adding to the archive name something like Urusoft Subtitle Workshop.
- Open the Sony Dvd Architect Subtitle created by Sony Vegas on a Notepad and copy the content to the clipboard.
- Open the Sony Dvd Architect Subtitle created by Urusoft Subtitle Workshop on a Notepad and paste the content of the clipboard. Save and close.
- Now you can open the Sony Dvd Architect Subtitle created by Urusoft Subtitle Workshop on Urusoft Subtitle Workshop and if you need, convert it to the format desired like SubRip srt, etc.
<>If you want to create SubRip srt subtitles format files from Sony DvdArchitect subtitles:(You can do the reverse action to import Srt files to Sony Vegas as Sony DvdArchitect subtitles file)
- Export them as DVD Studio Pro Subtitle txt format. I recommend adding to the archive name something like Sony DVD Architect to difference it from the DVD Studio Format that uses Urusoft Subtitle Workshop software. If you try to open it on Urusoft Subtitle Workshop it doesnt work yet.
- On Urusoft Subtitle Workshop software we create a new file and subtitle with whatever and save it adding to the archive name something like Urusoft Subtitle Workshop.
- Open the DVD Studio Pro Subtitle txt created by Sony DvdArchitect on a Notepad and copy the content to the clipboard.
- Open the DVD Studio Pro Subtitle txt created by Urusoft Subtitle Workshop on a Notepad and paste the content of the clipboard. Save and close.
- Now you can open the DVD Studio Pro Subtitle txt created by Urusoft Subtitle Workshop on Urusoft Subtitle Workshop and convert it the format desired like SubRip srt, etc.
Seems boring but is very practice to subtitle media from the start.
